Cultural Studies Program – Noongar
Kaya Wandjoo (Hello welcome),
Swan View Primary School is now in its 4th year of teaching Cultural Studies. A wonderful interactive, hands-on program, that engages our students through the arts, whilst learning our local Aboriginal language, Noongar.
Languages other than English (LOTE) is taught from Pre-Primary to Year 6, with a specific focus on the Whadjak (Perth) dialect. Learning the connectedness between people, country, animals and plants, our students understand the connectedness of culture, land and family to the Aboriginal people.
All students use a Cultural Studies workbook, whereby they read, write, illustrate and note- take information learnt from topics including; seasons, greetings, feelings, colours, actions and numbers. Collaborative tasks involve excursions, (most recently a trip to Kaarta Koomba -Kings Park) conducting role play or dance, or working with and listening to Elders and community members. Moorditj Primary School, Nanna Roma and Natasha Brockman, (our AIEO) support the Cultural Studies Program. Community members include our Elders whom attend our NAIDOC week activities. The Swans Football Club runs competitions and initiatives throughout our school community, further embedding cultural understanding at Swan View Primary School. We have an established committee working on our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP).
