Newsletter 15 August 2024 Term 3

Principal’s Message

Kaya Swan View Community,

We are almost halfway through the term already. It is impossible to believe! We have had such a great term so far with lots of exciting learning happening in our classrooms. You may have heard your child talking about our new recess and lunch changes. We have extended recess to 20 minutes to give our students more time to eat and play, and we have been allowing our students Year 1 – 6 play with each other in all areas of the school. Our students have been loving this, and they are having the best time getting to know other students and playing different games. Our expectations of having respect and being kind to others is being implemented and we are enjoying the new sense of belonging.

NAPLAN Results

These are exceptional results for Spelling in both Year 3 & 5 and Reading and Writing in Year 3 again is very positive. It is clear that our Letters & Sounds program has been effective and it is yielding strong results. Our Year 5 maths score is of concern and something that we are going to be looking at carefully as a staff. These results are excellent and something to really celebrate as a school community.

We have been investing heavily into upgrading our IT resources and your children may have gone home talking about the iPads we now have in classes! We have upgraded many of our tablets to iPads which also have keyboards attached. This investment is part of ensuring our students have access to the best technology to prepare them for our changing world. We have continued upgrading our school areas and over the last couple of weeks some of the following works have occurred:

-Painting inside of B block

-New carpets in music room and computer lab

-New bench seats in front of every classroom

-New bag hooks in front of every classroom

-Painting of the inside of the Art room and A6

-Roof repairs B block

We have lots more planned to happen and we hope you are continuing to enjoy our more modern looking school.

Results of School Review

I am thrilled to share some exciting progress with you. We have got the results of our School Review which has now been signed off by the Deputy Director General Steve Watson. We have successfully met four out of the six key areas, which is an excellent achievement and a testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone involved. In his summary letter to me, he stated:

“I acknowledge the efforts of you and your staff in endeavouring to create the conditions for successful students. The areas your school and the review team validated for commendation and those for which there are recommendations for ongoing improvement are noted.

I am informed that, in the short time under your leadership, staff, students, and the community have successfully united in pursuing shared goals. This has included significant improvements to the school grounds and facilities and an increase in the levels of positive student engagement in the learning environment. In the wake of these early achievements, I am advised that an air of optimism, pervades the mood of the community at what can be achieved over the coming cycle of school improvement.”

As we look forward to the next year, we are focusing on the remaining areas of Teaching Quality and Leadership, with plans already in motion:

Teaching Quality:
Our goal is to establish more consistent practices in our teaching, ensuring that our students receive the highest quality education possible. We will also be planning for cross-set initiatives in 2025, which will bring fresh opportunities for collaboration and growth. Additionally, we are strengthening our moderation practices, working closely with our peers at other schools to maintain and elevate our standards.

Leadership:
We are excited to develop a shared vision for our school, one that reflects the collective input of our community, students, and staff. Our motto, “Thinking of Others,” will guide this process as we strive to create a vision that truly resonates with everyone. This initiative will kick off in Term 4, and we are eager to involve everyone in this important work. Alongside this, we will continue to provide leadership opportunities for our staff and develop plans to ensure consistent practices across the board.

Please feel free to have a look at the detailed report on our website at swanviewps.wa.edu.au under OUR SCHOOL – REPORTS & PUBLICATIONS.

Last week, we had a parent session run by the Australian Federal Police around cyber safety for our children. We will be running another one in Term 4 as we feel this is a really important topic all parents need to be aware of. One of the things parents can do right now is download the BEACON app from https://beacon.telethonkids.org.au/

Beacon | Cyber Safety App The most trusted and up-to-date cyber safety information you and your family will need to navigate the ever-changing online world, is now at your fingertips! beacon.telethonkids.org.au

This app features the most up to date cyber information on how to keep your child safe in this ever changing environment. We highly recommend you download it.

Our P&C have been amazing this year and they have a new fundraiser currently happening with the pavers to go out the front of our Admin block. If you need a spare note, you can grab one at the front office. All proceeds will go to getting us a new playground. Our P&C have also generously donated funds for bus services for our students travelling to Interschool Sports. This has meant that families of these students have not had to pay for their children to attend which is extremely generous. We truly appreciate the contribution.

Bushfire season will be approaching in Term 4 and we wanted to make sure you were aware of our plans if there is a bushfire in our surrounds:

-PRIMARY ACTION: Everyone will move to the LIBRARY or EARLY CHILDHOOD UNIT as directed by Admin

-SECONDARY ACTION: Everyone will move to Swan View SHS GYMNASIUM or BROWN PARK HALL

As parents, if this occurs, you will be notified immediately via SMS. We will be having a fire drill in Term 4 to help us ensure all staff and students are prepared in case of this emergency.

We are looking forward to showcasing our classrooms on the 21 August 5pm – 6pm. This is a time where you can come in and see your child’s classroom and some of their work. We also have NAIDOC Day on the 22 August and parents are more than welcome to attend for the Assembly and/or Morning Tea. Our AIEO Tash has been doing a wonderful job of organising the day. Here is the agenda below:

Reminders

We have a couple of important reminders for parents. Please ensure your child has a school hat for recess and lunch.  A number of students are coming to the front office to get spare ones. Our students are not able to play in the sun without a school hat.

Also, thank you to our families who have been dropping their child off at 8am or after. We really appreciate your support. We are now having a number of students in the undercover area after school waiting for their parents. Please know that there is no teacher on duty after 3:05pm and parents need to ensure their child is picked up promptly as school finishes or have another parent who has assumed duty of care of the child/ren. We have Cuddles Daycare next door that offers after school care if needed. We also ask that students are not dropped off or picked up from the staff carpark. This is a safety risk.

Boorda,

Jemima Tomlinson

Aussies of The Month

Tahnae led by example and showed great initiative recently by donating a collection of toys to be used as prizes. She saw that there were those in need and did not hesitate to share what she had with others. Tahnae you have embodied the Aussie of the Month principles of Mate ship and Respect for others. Your kindness was greatly appreciated by many. Well done, Tahnae

EC4’s Maths lesson

EC4 using the new Ipads to do Mathletics.

EC4 students playing the Chocolate Chip Cookie game. The students had to roll a die and then decide on which cookie to place the choc chips, i.e. if they roll a 6, they will place 6 choc chips on the first row of cookies, if they rolled a 4, they would have to think about which row of cookies to place their choc chips.

Some photos of EC4 making 3D cubes using matchsticks

The students were making an algorithm for Mr Potato Head. They then had to give their algorithm to their partner to place Mr Potato Head together!

Cultural Studies

Congratulations to the following students who entered ‘The Wild at Art Competition’.  Based in Victoria, thousands of students enter each year, highlighting the importance of our native threatened species. Best of luck to the following students who entered-Kyrah Lucky, Emily Morrison, Maddison Schloss and Olive Carey-Allison. Please see below two wonderful examples entered-Kyrah and Emily’s work. Good luck everyone!

SPORTS NEWS

Sport in term 3

After a very busy term 2 with athletics and cross-country faction and interschool carnivals, this term is a little quieter with regard to sport.

Many of our year 5s, 6s and some year 4s are participating in a winter interschool sport competition. We have teams in AFL, netball, soccer and volleyball participating against Midvale, Middle Swan, Woodbridge, Greenmount and St Anthonys Primary schools.

We have already played St Anthonys and Midvale with mixed results.

Our A netball team has had a great win and a draw.

Our B netball team has played their heart out and showed great sportsmanship despite 2 losses.

Our AFL had a great win over Midvale after a 3 goal loss in our first game.

Our soccer team had a great game versus St Anthonys, which they lost 2-1 with the last kick of the game being a goal to St Anthonys. They were beaten by a very good Midvale team last week.

Our volleyball team drew their first game and had a loss against Midvale.

It has been great to see the positive attitude and great sportsmanship shown by our players.

We have 3 more games on Friday afternoons, ending on Friday August 30th with an away game against Middle Swan.

BOOKWEEK

Next week, we’re thrilled to kick off Book Week! To make sure everyone can join in the fun, we’ve chosen a theme that celebrates the joy of reading in an inclusive way. Our theme this year is “Books Make Life Colourful.” We selected this theme with consideration for all our families, ensuring that everyone feels comfortable and excited to participate. We can’t wait to see how students bring their favorite stories to life with vibrant creativity!

Date and timeWorkshop
Tuesday 23rd July 8pm – 10pmHealthy screentime habits (pre-schoolers and primary schoolers) Raising children in a digital age brings both benefits and risks for children and parents. The challenge is to manage the amount of time children spend on screens and keep them safe, as well as ensuring they take part in a range of other activities that are vital for their development. This presentation gives some suggestions to help you establish healthy screen time habits and routines, and deal with any conflict over screen time.
Tuesday 30th July 8pm – 10pmExpressing feelings without aggression (pre-schoolers) All children get upset and fight sometimes. This can happen because they are still learning how to manage their emotions, get along with others, and solve problems calmly. In this session, we will talk about responding to your child’s frustration and anger and suggest ideas that will help them express themselves in non-hurtful ways.
Tuesday 6th August 7pm – 9pmMaking and keeping friends (10-16 years) Peer relationships become increasingly important during the teenage years, and parents may find it difficult to navigate and adjust to these changes in relationships. This session will provide suggestions on how to support your child to make friends, encourage positive relationships with peers, set appropriate boundaries and deal with challenges that may arise.
Tuesday 13th August 7pm – 9pmRaising competent teenagers (10-16 years) A challenge for parents is knowing how to encourage your teen to make the most of their time at school. This session will provide some ideas on how to help teens develop the skills they need to become competent young adults. We will cover six key ingredients: developing self-discipline, being a good problem solver, establishing routines, getting involved in school activities, following school rules and having supportive friends.
Tuesday 20th August 8pm – 10pm  The power of positive parenting (under 12 years) Children of all ages need a safe, secure and loving environment to do well. This seminar will discuss children’s behaviour, how to create a safe, interesting and positive learning environment, how to use assertive discipline, and taking care of yourself as a parent.
Tuesday 27th August 8pm – 10pmPromoting self-esteem (pre-schoolers, primary schoolers and teens) As children grow up they form views of themselves as a person, their value as an individual and how good they are at doing things. This view of their self-worth is called self-esteem. This session will help you encourage your child to be confident and develop healthy self-esteem.
Tuesday 3rd September 8pm – 10pmLearning to separate (toddlers and pre-schoolers) All children have to learn to cope with temporary separations from their parents. Shyness around new people and anxiety about separation from parents is common in toddlers and pre-schoolers. This session will help you teach your child to be comfortable around others and calmly separate from you, into the care of another trusted adult/caregiver.
Tuesday 10th September 7pm – 9.30pmFear-Less: Supporting children with anxiety (6-14 years) Everyone feels anxious at times, even children and teenagers. But anxiety may cause distress and get in the way of life. This seminar will help parents to understand how anxiety works, how to manage your child’s anxiety effectively and teach your child new coping skills.
Tuesday 17th September 8pm – 10pmLearning to use the toilet (toddlers and pre-schoolers) Teaching children to use the toilet independently can be challenging for parents. This workshop will provide tips on when your child may be ready, the skills needed to use the toilet, and some common behavioural issues related to using the toilet. This workshop is suitable for parents of children with neurotypical development and does not address any medical problems related to using the toilet.
