Newsletter 30 June 2026

From the Principal

Kaya Swan View school community,

As we come to the end of another busy and successful term, I would like to sincerely thank our entire school community for your ongoing support. Ensuring students arrive at school ready to learn, and reinforcing our school policies and values at home, makes a significant difference to student success and wellbeing. We truly appreciate your partnership.

Student Reports

Student reports will be distributed this Wednesday.

This year, reports will look slightly different as they now include a Department of Education mandated limit of 1,000 characters for teacher comments. This ensures clarity and consistency across schools.

To better support individual learning needs:

  • Some students will receive a Special Education Needs Report, provided when students are working below expected levels for their age or have a diagnosed disability requiring additional support.
  • Some students will also receive an EAL/D (English as an Additional Language/Dialect) Report, for students who speak another language at home and are still developing skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening.

These additional reports help us tailor learning to each student’s strengths and needs.

Equity vs Equality

You may have seen the infographic shared showing the difference between equality and equity.

  • Equality means giving every student the same support.
  • Equity means giving each student the support they need to succeed.

At school, this means some students may receive additional assistance, resources, or adjustments. While this may at times appear uneven, it ensures every child has the opportunity to achieve their best. At Swan View PS we are committed to treating each child as an individual and supporting where we can.

Swan Cuddly Animal Farm

Next week, students who are in good standing will attend the Swan Cuddly Animal Farm. Students will get to interact with horses, sheep, goats and chickens!

It is important that we recognise and celebrate students who consistently demonstrate positive behaviour and uphold our school values.

Breakfast Club

Our Breakfast Club continues to thrive, with over 20 students attending each day.

A special thank you goes to our dedicated staff volunteers, especially Mrs Kayla Brown, who coordinates this wonderful program.

A healthy breakfast is essential as it:

  • Provides energy for learning
  • Improves concentration and memory
  • Supports emotional regulation and behaviour in class

Remember we open every morning from 8:00am – 8:20am in the C Block wet area.

Healthy Lunchboxes

Thank you to families who continue to pack nutritious lunches. Please see the picture attached to get ideas about what a healthy lunchbox might look like.

A healthy lunchbox should include a balance of:

  • Fruit and vegetables
  • Whole grains
  • Dairy
  • Lean proteins

Nutritious food fuels learning, supports sustained energy throughout the day, and promotes overall wellbeing. Including a refillable water bottle is also important for hydration.

Staffing Updates

  • Congratulations to Mrs Angela Hewer, who has been successful in securing the position of Library Officer (two days per week).
  • We would also like to thank our School Psychologist, Melita, who will be leaving us at the end of the term as she prepares to welcome her second child later this year. We are grateful for her valuable contribution to our students and school community and wish her all the very best. Miss Emily McKinnely will remain with us two days a week.
  • Starting next term, Mr Gulshan Price will be working four days a week and will be taking Wednesdays off. Mrs Melissa North will be covering the Wednesdays in the office (as well as continuing her Deputy Principal role on Fridays). We are excited to announce that Mr Kobi Morrison who is the Noongar Language Teacher at Moorditj is coming to teach our students on a Wednesday! It will be wonderful to have his skills and expertise at our school and we know our Wednesday LOTE students will love learning Noongar with him.

Kindergarten Enrolments

We currently have limited places available for Kindergarten 2027.

If you know of families looking to enrol, please encourage them to submit their applications as soon as possible to avoid missing out.

Air Conditioning Update

We are pleased to share that EC4 and EC5 have now been upgraded with refrigerated air-conditioning, ready for the warmer months.

Due to the age of our school’s electrical infrastructure, further upgrades across the school will require additional investigation into the power system. We will continue to keep the community informed as we progress.

Thank you once again for your continued support throughout the term. We wish all families a safe, relaxing, and enjoyable break, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back refreshed for the next term.

Boordawan,

Jemima Tomlinson

Principal

AIEO News

Kaya Families- Over the past term, we have been busy getting to know our students and building strong connections. Bev and I recently attended an AIEO training day, where we felt truly inspired learning alongside other deadly AIEOs and hearing about the amazing Aboriginal programs happening across schools. As part of this experience, we had the privilege of yarning with the Girrawheen High Stars and Clontarf programs, which focus on supporting student attendance. We know how important regular attendance is for student success, and this has been a key focus in our work at school. Through our own yarning circles with students, we have been having positive conversations about attendance. Students have been eager to set their own goals and really enjoy checking in on their progress along the way.

We look forward to continuing this work and supporting our students to thrive.

Around the Rooms

All the old people in C6

What a wonderful assembly we had last Wednesday from C6.

Our text for the term is Wilfred Gordon McDonald Partridge which looks at an elderly person who has lost their memory. We decided to do a play about Swan View Nursing Home and showed how memories could be restored.

EC4’s Design and Technology lesson

Students first had to write down the algorithm for the Bee-Bot. Then, students had to program the Bee-Bot using the arrow buttons on the Bee-Bot mat.

Students play a survival game, aiming to keep their character away from zero and reach the safety spot (20). Students play using a 0 to 20 number line. Students start their character at the halfway mark (10). Students pull cards from a playing deck. Red means their character walks backwards (towards 0), black means their character walks forwards (towards 20). The winner is the person who reaches 20 first (the boat) or the person who avoids touching zero first (the sharks). Extended students were given 120 number chart.

The Yr6 Flute students, Joan and Mikee, performed Oompa Loompa and The Can-Can for our Kindergarten EC1 students today.

Pressing pause on tech tantrums: positive switch-off strategies

Does managing screen time feel like a daily battle in your family? If so, you’re not alone. Many parents face frustration and pushback, but these challenges don’t mean you’re doing anything wrong.

The pull of screens is strong, and kids easily lose track of time: what feels like five minutes can turn into fifty. Many apps and games trigger dopamine responses, making it harder to step away. So when the screen goes off, children are not just pausing a game: they are abruptly ending something deeply absorbing and enjoyable.

But with the right tools and strategies, you can turn screen time struggles into opportunities for balance and connection, for any age group. By making screen time predictable, introducing engaging follow-on activities, using visual timers, and modeling calm responses to frustration, we can help kids navigate tech challenges with confidence.

Triple P’s latest article empowers parents and carers with straightforward information like this for a calm and positive approach to switching off screens.
